PUKAR (Partners for Urban Knowledge Action and Research), a Mumbai-based independent research collective, is looking to hire a media manager for a new research project:

About the project

‘Mythologies of Mumbai through Media’ is a PUKAR project oriented towards broadcasting through various media, relevant redevelopment issues from the Girgaon and Dharavi neighbourhoods of Mumbai. PUKAR plans to train community-based Barefoot Researchers to use digital/social media to create media products which will be taken to a larger platform of local and global audience. The products will be based upon the archived oral histories, mapping and photographs.

In this three-year project, PUKAR will also conduct research on how marginalised people access the media that impact their lives, aspirations and realities. The issue of media access, media costs and the viewership of the urban poor will be explored by conducting surveys in various communities.

Media Manager

PUKAR is looking for a Media Manager who will help hone its researchers’ skills for using various media such as radio, television and web-based social networking sites; as well as assist in developing and disseminating the various media products and network with media channels.

Responsibilities

• Full-time position
• Supervise and guide PUKAR researchers and community youth in areas of research, development and media production activities
• Develop content for the media products along with the team
• Design and coordinate all project-related activities with media partners, consultants (creative and technical), in house team and community youth
• Create a web-based integrated platform for elucidating the local issues researched, through multiple media. Manage the content and functionality of the web-based and other interfaces, including evaluating, art and design, programming and content.
• Provide advice and counsel best practices on web and new media, including search engine optimisations (SEO), podcasts and RSS feeds.
• Establish and manage contacts with mainstream media and social networking sites.

Skills and experience

The organisation is looking for a creative person who is a team player, with demonstrated passion for socially conscious media. Someone with 3-5 years of experience working with socially relevant media content, managing a team within a limited budget.

Comet Media Foundation is doing a project on the education of Children with Special Needs. The audience for these educational materials will be parents, teachers and other caregivers.
The research towards this project runs from the beginning of April till the end of July 2011. It involves the detailed study and evaluation of materials already in use in India, field visits to two locations to observe the actual use of the materials and to obtain information on their effectiveness from field workers and other users. This will be followed by further interactions in Mumbai and a report will be prepared providing an assessment of the effectiveness of the various materials used with recommendations for adding new ones and dropping or modifying the materials in use at present, if required.

1. Researcher and Project Manager

She or he will be responsible for detailed design of the study, planning and coordination of the field visits, data collection and validation, report preparation and presentation with the help of a research assistant.
The ideal candidate would be in his/her 20s with at least three years of relevant work experience including projects involving disability issues and other social research. A degree or diploma in social work from a reputed institution would be an added benefit. The person selected would be paid a consolidated amount of Rs. 30,000 per month for four months in addition to travel and other work related expenses.

2. Research Assistant
The Research Assistant would assist the project manager in coordination, obtaining documents, data collection (both in the field and the office) and analysis, data entry and report preparation.
Any relevant qualification and at least a year of work experience in this field would be preferable. The incumbent will be paid a consolidated amount of Rs. 15,000 per month for four months in addition to travel and other work related expenses.

Two friends with similar qualifications who like working as a team could also apply and the amount will be shared between them.

• Be the primary point of contact within Arpan for any event-related activities
• Be responsible for supervising the day to day implementation and staff performance on the various of the prevention unit projects and report the same to the Programme Manager through the organisational update formats.
• Play a supportive role to the Programme Manager to prepare fortnight and monthly reports for submission to the CEO.
• Ensure that the Project Officers submit the data from the feedback, pre and post test formats for the various projects to the Research Unit within the stipulated time line.
• Play support role to the Programme Manager in finalizing a process document for the projects of the Prevention Unit as well as a process manual for the various awareness, PSE and capacity building modules.

Knowledge, skills and abilities:

• Post Graduate degree in Sociology/ Social Work/Social Entrepreneurship and other related disciplines.
