Garage sale for WSD


The Welfare of Stray Dogs (WSD) is an animal welfare NGO that sterilises and immunises stray dogs. It also has an adoption programme for abandoned pets and pariahs, an on-site first–aid programme and an education and awareness programme in schools, colleges, streets and slums. WSD has till now sterilised more than 40,000 stray dogs and impacted the lives of thousands more through first-aid, immunisation and adoption.

WSD spends Rs 3,50,000 per month on the above activities and depend on the largesse of donors to fund these activities.

One of the methods of raising funds to sustain costs is their regular garage/jumble sales. The next such sale is being held on May 13-15, 2011 (Friday-Sunday) at Walkeshwar, near Chowpatty, the proceeds of which will go toward funding WSD’s initiatives.

Some of the items on sale are:

  • Vaccumizer and set of jars
  • Juicer
  • Vintage collection of  L.Ps

Garage sale for a cause II


Hamara Footpath, a community group that works with street children, is organising its second garage sale to raise funds for its work. The group organised its first garage sale in August 2010, raising Rs 80,000 rupees in two days, which helped pay for educational classes and sports and dance classes that the group organises for street children in Churchgate.

The sale will have collected trendy women’s clothes collected from various sources like fashion designers, boutiques and barely worn clothes from people’s cupboards to sell. 100% of the money raised will go towards supporting Hamara Footpath’s activities.

Designers like Divya Anand, Masaba Gupta, Swapnil Shinde, Varsha Chandnani have donated their creations along with other fashionistas. There will also be live performances in the evening by Agnee, Aazin Printer & Stuart DaCosta (of Something Relevant), Nikhil D’Souza, Pia Sukanya and Ankur Tewari have volunteered to perform in the evenings.
Masseuse from Metta Foot Reflexology Spa (which employs only visually challenged masseuse) will be offering foot massages at discounted prices.

Shop online for charity


eBay India has a dedicated shopping section for increased visibility for NGO products. The Shop for a Cause section aims at offering Indian NGOs a platform to raise funds by retailing their products to a national and global audience of savvy, online shoppers.

Over 40 NGOs are registered with eBay India’s Charity Platform, which includes CRY, Save the Children, and Women’s India Trust. The new Charity Home on eBay India will allow easy access for interested shoppers who want to support the NGOs and offer them safe, easy payment options.

Subscribe to organic vegetables


In response to the demand for fresh organic produce in Mumbai, Mumbai Organic Farmers and Consumers Association (MOFCA) has decided to start the ‘Hari Bhari Tokri’ scheme- a weekly supply of vegetables sourced straight from organic farms around Mumbai.

Partnership terms:

  1. Sign up for one growing season (3-4 months) starting with winter – November to January. The summer season will run from February to May and the monsoon cycle from June to September.
  2. A list of vegetables grown during the season will be distributed so consumers will know what to expect. Consumers are requested to register 45 days before the start of the season.
  3. At the time of registering, you will be required to give a deposit of Rs 500 for the season. If you withdraw from the scheme at the end of the season, this amount is refundable (minus any expenses incurred during the season) or donatable to the continuing of the project.
  4. Each week, on a pre-determined day, your tokri will be delivered to your pre-selected pick-up point. Members are requested to collect their tokris the same day and make their payment at the time of pick-up.
  5. There are currently two tokri sizes for the entire season. A small tokri (minimum 250g of each vegetable/Total 1.5 kg) costs Rs 100 and a medium tokri (minimum 500g of each vegetable/ total 3 kg) costs Rs 200.

Garage sale for a cause


Hamara Footpath, a community group that works with street children, is having a garage sale for a cause. They are collecting women’s and girls’ clothes and selling them for a cause on the Independence Day weekend (August 14-15 2010). The money raised will go towards supporting Hamara Footpath’s ongoing efforts to educate the street children living in and around Churchgate. You could help in the following:

1. Donating good clothes in good condition. (This isn’t your typical donation drive. The clothes will be sold at a nominal price to regular consumers. So only donate things in a condition good enough for you to buy).

2. Volunteering to help organise. Help sort clothes, label them, iron and wash etc.

3. Spread the word! Help by tweeting, Facebooking, getting featured in media.

4. Show up and buy.

When: August 14-15, 10 am to 5 pm
